Connecting People and Properties in Meaningful Ways
Architecture for Lives (AFL) has an embedded mission to create and maintain architecture for lives. We identify restorative and repurposing opportunities that mold and renew our community person by person, project by project. We strive to instill a sense of purpose and significance within the architectural structures and the individuals we’re championing. The most important question we ask about each project or each recipient is “How will this change lives?”
When looking through a camera lens, objects in the world are shaped, even transformed, by the variance in each lens. The unique lens of AFL views architectural properties, people, and projects with a vision of possibilities for now and for the future.
AFL selects property that is available and in need: a vacant lot, a new structure ready for the perfect tenant, an old structure that cries out for rehabilitation with the appropriate vision; an “eye of the beholder” artifact calling for restoration or repurposing to reclaim their former glory. The AFL mission is to identify and develop the clear and sharply defined possibilities inherent in each project.
AFL also champions people, individuals with a marketable skill set. We select individuals with a specific talent or need, who will be involved, excited, and grateful for the opportunity to hone and share their specific craft.
Buildings and people deserve the consideration of today and tomorrow. At Architecture for Lives, we are committed to focusing our efforts on our posterity and their future, while ensuring our investment is both wise and sustainable. Because of this belief, AFL project opportunities have the ability to create momentum towards each project to come, as we work to positively influence lives.
In composition and in life, we can often improve the way a scene looks by adjusting how we’re looking at it—changing our lens. Architecture for Lives believes in learning to see things from varied angles and perspectives, always striving to improve social objectives and the common good. We believe in sharing the success of self and other, inspiring duplication and dedication.
Andrea McCulloch, AFL founder and owner of Milieu Design, has always seen her architectural and design work as a metaphor of the people that form and shape a space. Each building has a unique history and story to tell. Much like the people who inhabit those spaces, these buildings have flaws, quirks, maybe even a difficult challenge to overcome. However, viewing these buildings and people with the lens of “What could it be?” allows new ideas to unfold. Many unloved and outdated spaces have the potential to become vibrant, beautiful properties with a new lease on life. AFL’s mission is to pair the right people with the right properties to collectively lift communities.
